Wow. There is nothing on TV.

When my life gets busy, the first thing to go is usually time spent in front of the Idiot Box.  Besides, I prefer Blockbuster rentals to aimless channel flipping any day.

But after my recent...uh, layoff?...I've had a whole week to catch up.

Guess what?  I haven't missed much.

TLC is still running A Horror Story A Baby Story and terrifying (and yet at the same time boring--which is surprisingly difficult to do) pregnant women every morning.  Daytime talk shows all feature the same gay stories on how to dress 10 pounds thinner, cook 300 calorie dinners, and snag the latest hair trends (hint:  think RED!  SQUEE!).  And, just like 3 years ago, I end up on MTV watching True Life:  I'm a Crack Whore and letting my ass sink a couple inches deeper into the sofa.

Yep.  TV still sucks.

But wait!  What the hell happened to my beloved History Channel?!?  Who turned her into yet another reality show hootch?

I'm probably the only nerd who likes to zone out in front of a good historical documentary...but damn it, I'm pissed about the junk they are trying to pawn off as "historical".  First up?  American Pickers.

These two winners are supposed to "search across America rescuing treasures".  Actually, they're driving up to your senile Grandpa's farm and screwing him out of his antiques.  Classy.  Every episode features them snickering behind some lonely old man's back and offering him a couple bucks for items they're going to turn around and sell for a couple hundred.

Ugh.  Assholes.

Anyone remember Antiques Roadshow?

People drag Great Aunt Bertha's crap in and let professional appraisers tell them how much it's worth.  Usually every episode features some redneck named Dale who's all pissed because his treasure turns out to be fake (of course Oklahoma flea markets sell Ming vases!) and the appraisers are all dried up history professors with zero personality.

Here's the History Channel's rip off:

Pawn Stars!  Antiques Roadshow meets Las Vegas Pawn Shop--and hilarity ensues!  *eye roll*

Alright, it's better than a bunch of old WASPs showing off their priceless antiques on PBS, but what's "historical" about customers trying to sell their junk for a quick buck?  The shop owner calls in experts to appraise the antiques (that takes about 2 minutes) and then the rest of the time that fat guy on the left screws around with his dee-dee-dee friend out in the parking lot.

Awesome.

And what is up with AMC?  I loooove old black and white movies.  Who doesn't like curling up in bed with a bottle of nail polish, a bag of Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, and a 1930's actress with over plucked eyebrows and boxy shoulder pads flipping her cigarette around and saying weird phrases like, "I'll be back in two shakes of a lamb's tail!"

Imagine my horror when I switched it on tonight to find some lame Sean Connery movie that come out in 2003.  American Movie Classics my ass.

I would cut cable, but Elizabeth would die from Disney withdrawal.  So help me out--what do you watch?

We have sattalite.. that doesn't look right.. anyway. I love the DIY network, green channel, science channel, and my son (2) LOVES baby channel. But, so does my husband at bedtime. It used to be a race between them of who would fall asleep faster- now my husband wins. Every night.

During the day -- NOTHING! I agree, it all sucks. My daughter gets to watch whatever she wants all day, b/c I know there's nothing better on.

Hubby and I are catching up on The Office (on season 4) Weeds (on season...3, I think) and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

I can't do day time tv, other then General Hospital. I DVR it and usually end up watching episodes back to back when I have time :)

I watch hulu.com. Way better than anything daytime tv has to offer.

We have a DVR, so we record shows and watch them later (i.e. after the kids go to bed). I don't watch a whole lot of daytime tv. It all sucks. Of course the Food Network and Travel Channel usually have some cool stuff on. I also second hulu.com and ch131.com

I LOVE Pawn Stars! I can't believe you don't like it. I hear you on American Pickers...but my husband loves it. Mostly because he's a big pack rat that has a bunch of old rusty crap in the backyard! :)

We cut our cable a few months ago - My elder daughter was beginning to sound too much like some of the TV charachters - complete with head wagging and "whut-EVAR!"

She's 8. Isn't that stuff supposed to wait for 12 or 14 to start??

We have a tonne of DVD's (and have borrowed) and after the kids go to bed (the only time we have time for that) we were watching Scrubs (I had never seen any) and Californication (I loathed it and loved it all at the same time. I became one of those people who talked to the TV to try to make the characthers BEHAVE!lol.)

During the day, if I find a moment that's not filled with business calls, Facebook, or laundry, I walk downtown with my journal (and my business cards! haha!) and have a coffee and a scribble.

:)

Hahaha...This would be why we don't have TV. I get way more entertainment and satisfaction from wasting my time on the internet.

I'm an admitted Food Network junkie, and those HGTV shows usually hold my interest, but you have a valid point: most daytime cable is total crappola.
Sounds like ye ole internet aka bloggyland may still be the best form of entertaining yourself (and us!)

Chuck, The Middle, Modern Family, PBS... Hmmm. These are all on the local channels. Considering the cutting the cable

My book addiction costs about the same every month and my needs are much more urgent than my dear children's addictions to Dirtiest Jobs, Clone Wars, Word Girl, and Blue's Clues.

I mean, really.

Oh, definitely nothing on TV during the day worthy of watching..but somehow I'm sucked in anyways. I think it might have something to do with it being my only contact besides the 3 1/2 week old baby ;)

TV at our house right now...features news about the Olympics and the Olympics...my hubby loves it. I am pretty active and gone several evenings during the week....when I come home...he is sitting glassy eyed...with the Olympics on. After he goes to sleep...I watch a CSI rerun...or the Food Channel....and usually fall asleep before it is over. Now I am hearing the rumblings of a big screen flat tv....why? why do we need 56 inches of sports in the tv room? We still get the history channel it is one of my favorites...loved the show not long ago on rum runners, moonshiners et al. I guess you have to live in the south...where you can make booze...you just can't sell it. LOL

I like Pawn Stars...but I DVR them and fast forward thru the two idiots on there than annoy me to death! American Pickers just pisses me off ripping the old folks off, watched it once and never again. I basically over pay on my sattalite so my kids have cartoons to watch:)

Just wanted to say, I totally agree with you about American Pickers! I've watched an episode and a half, and that show is disturbing. Those poor people are really being ripped off. It's not right.
