Bedrest and Peeing in a Jug. Jealous Much?

My blood pressure is up, so I had to submit to a few tests including...wait for it...a 24 hour urine collection!

Right now, there is a large orange jug sitting in a bucket of ice in my bathroom filled with stinky pee.  In another couple hours I can run this disgusting pee jug back to the lab and go through even more blood tests.

Just why the lab needs an entire GALLON of my pee was never explained to me, and by the time the lab tech shoved the jug at me and moved on to the next poor soul in the waiting room (seriously, the hospital lab serves more people than McDonalds) it was too late to ask.  What happened to peeing in a cup?!?

If my tests come back weird, then I have pre-eclampsia and Dr. Loompa will induce me.  (Eventually.  Someday.  Maybe.)  Until then, I'm back to laying around with my feet up because apparently I'm over doing it and that's causing all the false labor drama.

(I'd really like to know how I'm "over doing it" because I seriously do NOTHING other than sit up and talk.)

Ugh.  2 more weeks, 2 more weeks, 2 more weeks...

I did the 24 hour test, too. I think it's not that they need the whole jug, but that the are looking to see if it's an ongoing issue (thus in every bit of peeing done) or a one time thing. For me it was a one time thing. we were there for early contractions (@ 35 weeks), but they kept us waiting for so long that my blood pressure skyrocketed.

I had to do the 24 hour pee collection thing too! How gross is that?!?! I was already in the hospital b/c of my BP though, so I had to call a nurse every few hours and ask her to replace my pee ice... Ahhh good times.

That is HORRIBLE! I hope everything works out and they find that you don't have preeclampsia!! Good luck!

I am a RN. Your doctor is measuring how well your kidneys are performing, a 24 hour sample is necessary---sorry. They took blood work prior to the urine collecting and then will take it after watching your BUN and creatinine. You need to trust him, lie down on your left side, and take care of yourself. You can end up with a lot of problems so listen to him and don't take it lightly. Your baby and you need the rest.

Thanks for your input. Dr. Loompa never explains why's or what for's, which is maddening. Why doesn't he tell me stuff is serious?!? GAH!

Take care of yourself. It will be fine.

I had pre-eclampsia...I have been where you are...my daughter will be 30 in June...I was induced a month shy of her due date...because of it.

I didn't mean to scare you to death, but pre-eclampsia is dangerous. I had it as well, I was a nurse, I knew what all could happen so when I was hospitalized, I did exactly what they told me to do. I am sorry your doctor doesn't explain things. Just take care, stay on bedrest, left sidelying, keep stress as low as possible, follow his instructions. If you have any problems, call Dr. What's His Face. He may know what he is doing and just not have a good bedside manner. If you see spots in front of your eyes, feel dizzy, have a severe headache, have bleeding vaginally (other than bloody show), anything out of the ordinary, call him. My doctor had 0 bedside manner, but I needed someone who knew what he was doing because I was high risk for many, many reasons. I wish you the best!

That 24 hour urine test sucks! At least you are able to be at home. I had to tote a styrofoam cooler with ice and my pee from the lab, to work, to home, to work and then back to the lab. That sure made for some interesting conversation those 2 days at work. I hope your test results come back negative to pre-eclampsia. Take it easy and get some rest!

Hang in there! You're almost there, you're almost there. Take good care of yourself and keep your eyes on the finish line. When you're holding that delicious baby the pee gallon will be a distant memory....

I swear! I read your post this morning, went to the dr this afternoon and I had some protein in my urine! I'm 35 weeks, no swelling, good bp, no headaches, nothing. Just some protein. Now I have a bright orange jug also lol!! They said it could just be from too much activity. While I'm not on strict bedrest, he told me to take it easy. So here's to hoping neither of us have any issues!!

24 hours pee sample. I'm sorry dude. That is not cool. I am SO ready to be done, but luckily I'm not stuck lying down. Although sometimes I feel like I wish I was. Actually, mostly I just want this baby to get the eff out of me right now. Oh well. I hope everything turns out okay and that the day comes soon!

Ugh...that blows!! I worked with a girl that had to do that...we told her to just keep it in the last stall behind the tank. She was taking it back and forth...poor thing. She DID have pre-e and had to have her early. Good luck girl!!
