Side Effect of Colic: Chiropractic Adjustments?

Since blowing out my girlie bits giving birth, my lower back has been killing me. For 2 months I've chalked it up to:

1. Normal postpartum recovery
2. Being 30 pounds overweight *sigh*
3. Bouncing on an exercise ball with Elodie during her worst screaming fits

The exercise ball has been invaluable. I used it during pregnancy to stretch out my hips and help with SPD. I used it during false labor. And now, I'm using it as a better alternative to the rocking chair. (I have yet to use it as an actual exercise ball, but whatever.)

I swaddle Elodie, mash her into my chest, and start bouncing. Bounce. Bounce. Bounce. Bounce. Bounce. Bounce. Elodie stops screaming. Bounce. Bounce. Bounce. Bounce. Bounce. Bounce. Bounce. Bounce. Bounce. Bounce. Bounce. Bounce. Bounce. Bounce. She shuts her eyes. Bounce. Bounce. Bounce. Bounce. Bounce. Bounce. Bounce. Stop. Elodie opens her eyes, waves her arms. Frantic bounce. Bounce. Bounce. She starts screaming. Again. Angry bounce. Angry bounce. Angry bounce. She stops and shuts her eyes with a pitiful whimper. Bounce. Bounce. Bounce. Bounce. Bounce.

You get the idea, right? Add in normal baby lugging duties and my back locked up.

So. I went to a chiropractor.

Some people love their chiropractors and want to make out with them. Ummm...me? Not so much. But I never was one of those people who lurrrrvvves to have her back cracked or sighs in relief when her knuckles pop. *shudder*

You can laugh--but I thought an adjustment would be like a deep tissue massage or something. I was NOT prepared to be body slammed on a table! And it comes out of nowhere! We'll be talking as he's moving me around and suddenly--BAM!--the guy jumps on me. Even worse? He gets off and keeps talking like nothing happened. I'm laying on the table wild eyed and stunned and he's chit chatting about his four kids.

Hate it. It's worse than a haunted house on Halloween when the freaks who work there are allowed to touch you. Creepers. I walk into the exam room in a defensive crouch with my back to the wall like a triggering Vietnam vet.

Also? The X-ray of my spine reminds me of Mr. Burns.

Excellent. Soon I will have a mighty hump.

Daddy loves his chiropractor - but I don't think he gets body slammed. He DID, however, go through quite a few before finding the right one; speak up! Or try seeing someone new - I think Daddy's experience more closely matches what you're looking for: more gentle, but firm stretching, and no sudden wrestling moves.

i have heard that some do on babies and that makes the colic stop...u should look into that...i had at least 3 friends who did it with a younger chiropractor- who said if people just didnt have this perception of us, we can help with lots of things even sinus problems.

I just wanted to say that I love your blog. I think you're hilarious and I like that you don't make raising children out to be all sunshine and roses. I can't stand blogs like that. Sorry you're having a hard time with your back and the colic!

Also, I just wanted to ask if you've thought about taking Elodie to the chiropractor? I don't have any personal experience with this, but I've read that it can help ease colic/reflux issues. Good luck to you!

I've had the same lower back trouble since delivering #2. It comes and goes, but man is it a pain (literally) in the morning!
I feel like an old lady hobbling around. So pitiful. I've thought about seeking a chiropractor's care, but after reading your post, I'll be sure to ask around a lot before I make an appointment!

I agree with Cole- I HATE the one guy in the office I go to but LOVE the other guy.

A little bed side manner goes a long way before I let you do something that could potentially paralyze me, K?

Sorry about the back and the crazy chiropractor. That doesn't really sound like my cup of tea either.

Try looking for a non force chiropractor. I used one when I was pregnant and could barely walk from the pain of sacroilliac joint dysfunction (maybe similar or related to spd?) and it was very pleasant... More like accupressure... And it helped a lot!!! Good luck, I am sorry you're in pain:(

I haven't checked blog world in a while. I guess you've been to the chiropractor by now; hope it wasn't too traumatic! I would love a good crack on my back. Kase seems to be getting a little bit better; we think most of his issues are due to bad reflex and he's on some meds for it. We leave for Florida on Friday so pray for us! :)

I've found that unfortunately, many chiropractors are hit or miss. I have one I ABSOLUTELY love now, but the first couple I went to were not so great. They didn't even do XRays or anything, which I didn't realize a good chiropractor will do until I went to one later. Chiropractic can be really helpful, so if you don't like where you're going I'd encourage you to check out another place before giving up!

I have also heard (my cousin is a chiro) that adjustments for babies do wonders for colic. Be forewarned - they adjust babies by hanging them upside down by one foot. Seriously - they did it to Wes a few weeks ago. It didn't seem to upset him too much...
