People saying, "What?" and leaning in closer.
People saying, "What?" again and then mouthing the name with a funny look on their face.
And now this.
*sigh*
Attention Western PA: Her name is Elodie. El. O. Dee. It's really quite simple. Say it under your breath a few times. Elodie. It's pretty, huh? So next time you read her name off a piece of paper in a crowded waiting room...
Her name is not E-LOAD-E.
Seriously? Seriously. Why would I name my kid Load?
Wide load. Dump a load. Load of shit.
But not E-load-e.

Thank you.

I have a daughter named Georgia Kate. It is nearly impossible for people to include the Kate. The good thing is, she knows how much it drives me crazy and has stopped responding to people simply calling her Georgia. She will go on in her own little world until she is addressed properly.
And, for the record, I love the name Elodie!
I love the name Elodie! I grew up with a name that most people couldn't pronounce to save their live, let alone spell it if they heard it. My name has been butchered in SOOO many ways, I hated it growing up. I actually used to make up names to introduce myself by just to make it easier. However, by the time I was a sophomore in HS, I began to really love my name...I am the only one of me anywhere (unless someone knew me and borrowed my name for a child). I had planned to name my daughter an unusual name, but then her father refused to sign her birth cert unless I gave her a "normal" name. >.< She's heard the story so many times, and she already wants nothing to do with him, she has adopted it and is contemplating changing her name when she turns 18. LOL
My birthname is Draea Lael Begel, pronounced Draya Lay-el Bee-gel (hard G). Then I married a Johnson, hehe.
Daughter's name was supposed to be Acacia Dawn, Ah-cay-sha, She's Jessika Diane now.
A name is just a name until it becomes part of who you are. Elodie is such an elegant, sweet name full of promise. I am sure she will be just fine!

Your funny and I completely relate to you! As a fellow Mother who named their child with an original name that I had never heard anyone having "Ashlynn" that sounds very similar to a common name "Ashley" (your child's name does too: similar to Melody I think; you probably get THAT a lot too huh?!) I am CONSTANTLY correcting people(AshLYNN!), spelling her name (a.s.h.L.Y.N.N!)and then correcting them AGAIN (I said LYNN not LEE!) And if they don't mistake her name for the common one; they too, confuse it with a name that someone, imo, in their right mind wouldn't name a GIRL with: ASHLAND! That's a fricken city in Oregon and probably an islands name too; its not a fricken girl's name and where do they hear a "D"? People need to open their fricken ears when you speak to them & use common sense when saying names. Sadly though, there are those mother's out there who DO name their children after loads of shit & ugly names for girls; not to mention the 10 trillion mothers out there who have just HAD to name their kids Ashley so that 1 in every 2 kids has the name so now everyone thinks MY daughter does too - and these "mothers" just ruin it for the rest of us!
I love the name! I love it when parents are creative with children's names.
Its not like you named your kid Lagina (yea, like VAGINA) or Google.
I get this everytime with Hagen.
"Hagen." "Aidan?" "HAGEN." "Hayden?" "HAGEN!" "Caiden?!"
I hear ya, lady. I birthed Maksim (with a K 'cuz it's kooler.)
I just tell morons his name is Maks (pronounced Max) so I don't hurt their brain.
Amanda, I have a Hagen too! I hear ya on the "Hayden?" "Aiden" thing.
Jaci, I personally LOVE the name Elodie! I think it is so pretty and unique...and honestly, I couldn't imagine mispronouncing it.
I have a girl due November and am already getting the weird looks of disgust at the name we are more than likely using. It is Hazel Grace after my great grandma...people don't seem to like it at all...but who cares!
Well, Mines name is Cornelia, nor Cornelius. Worse, she goes by Neely, and NO ONE can get it right. Even her own grandparents. It's sooo annoying. Come on people it's not rocket science, it sounds like it's spelled, and more importantly have you ever seen a girl named Cornelius?! Me either.
I have a last name that sounds like a curse word so now when I say it, I always spell it before anyone can do the "pardon"?????
My new baby girl is Elin (EEEE-lyn, yeah like Tiger Woods wife haha). We get "Ellen" a lot, but its funny because its mostly men that say ELLEN, the women get it: ELIN.
I have a first name which is recognisable, but mine is spelt differently from the usual way (there's an extra "L" in the middle). I've had to get used to having to say "with two Ls" whenever I say it.
Plus my last name is double barreled which always confuses people, and they sometimes try to write it as one word.
The first half in impossible to spell phonetically, so I always have to explain that too. The second part is very common, so people in offices often ignore the first part and just check for the second part, and I have to go, "Actually, that's not my surname, that's only half of it".
INFURIATING!!!!
By the way I love the name Elodie
These comments are interesting - I didn't know folks got so mad when we accidentally screw up names! I work with different kids each day, and parents often take creative license with the spelling of common names, or use unique names...and although I try my best, I have been known to screw up a pronunciation now and then. I promise it isn't malicious, and that I'm not an idiot. But if you spell your kid's name "Tiphenea" and expect me to come out with "Tiffany," you have come to the wrong place. I figure if you spell something creatively, you were going for a creative name, no? So don't pounce if I say "Tiff-en-eh-a" - I'm just following your lead!
(for the record Jaci, I would have passed the Elodie test with flying colors!)
I feel like if people know the basic rules of grammar, they should have zero problems pronouncing Elodie...
Man-Child's first name is a breeze for people to say - except it horrified the family. "Where did you come up with THAT name?" Because it wasn't a "family" name (i.e., named after his grandfather) it wasn't normal. Now our last name? (which is about 4 syllables long & has many vowels) Forget about it. MC learned how to spell it out first when he was about 3 simply from hearing me spell it to just about everyone we came in contact with.....
We have a French friend named Elodie
In France everyone knows her name.
Not to many in Utah do.
I popped over from Sue's saw you
comment there.
Oh, people are just retards.
They can't even pronounce my last name right. It's "Tubb." As in, bathTUB with an extra B. They look at me and say "could you spell that again? I don't understand." I'm like ... *facepalm*
And Elodie is a perfectly easy name to say and a beautiful one at that. Once again, people are retards when it comes to anything slightly harder than Joe or Jane.
Sheesh. It's Melodie minus the M. Come on people! :)
As a teacher, I often come across names with unique spellings. On the first day of school, before I EVER call role, I tell them to please correct me if I say their names wrong, and then I write it phonetically on my temporary roster.
I love her name.
honestly its not that hard.
People are dumb. Elodie is an adorable name. I don't understand why anyone would have a problem with it if they graduated from first grade.
I have a Cason (Cay-son). We get Carson, Caden, Cass-en, all kinds of crap. When he was a baby, someone had a blanket monogrammed for him. When she got it back from the embroiderer it said, "CARSON" because the lady had just assumed that the r had been left out on the order sheet. (Actually, I got three blankets that said Carson.) IT'S CASON. CASON!!!!!!
I think Elodie is a beautiful name. I have never heard it before, but I like it.
