Oh, Twitter.
I'm trying. I'm really, really trying.
At the blog conference, I realized I was the only human in the room not on Twitter. In fact, lots of people were on laptops tweeting about everything that was happening. And? Some were sending direct messages about what was happening to other bloggers sitting right across the room.
I shit you not.
I peeked at few laptops and muttered "What the hell?" under my breath, then realized I needed to find that old Twitter account I opened up long ago. (I gave up on Jan 7th, 2009 with this: "I totally miss the point of Twitter. Anyone else think this is stupid?")
After seeing the way people drooled over their Tweet Decks and iPhones, I gave it another shot. I'm following about 100 people. I have some people following me. I jump into little conversations. I throw out ridiculous tweets.
Sometimes it's pretty cool. I go on and catch funny one-liners or say hi to a blog friend. But most of the time I don't get it. It's like a room full of people where everyone is talking and no one is listening. Or, if they are listening? They don't acknowledge you.
I finally figured out what Twitter is. Anyone remember chat rooms? From 1996? I remember screwing around with them in high school. You'd pick a room, log in, and inevitably there were a few Chat Room Freaks who would roll their eyes at the "new guy" and ignore you. The more time you spent in there as a lowly peon, the greater your odds of finally becoming one of the Accepted Members.
And then some perv would DM you and ask for your age and panty preference.
To me, Twitter is the world's biggest chat room with a side of High School Popularity Contest. See how many followers I have? See how many people @ me? Everyone, look at the conversation I'm having!!! I. Am. FABULOUS.
*sigh*
I like blogging. I like Facebook. But Twitter? I can't get into it.
So. If you follow me on Twitter, you'll probably get totally random thoughts from me. Like, "RIP Jaci's Mad Boil. Dr. Loompa stabbed it without numbing it. 'Cause he's hardcore."
Nothing real. Nothing serious. Just stupidity from @RavingMadJaci
You're welcome.

I love blogging and facebooking...but twitter I can live without too. Welcome to the club...I thought I was the only one out there.
i finally gave in and joined twitter about a month ago. mainly because i was tired of different organizations i'm a part of saying "just follow us on twitter". i mean COME ON. but not i'm kind of sort of liking it. although i completely get the chat room w/a side of high school popularity. SO true.
And all this time I thought I was the only loser in that room without a twitter account. Seriously, the snickers at each table was getting to me. By the end of the night I was getting a 101 by tha Cathy PR lady....lucky me, huh?
So I am in the same boat (but with only like 30 followers)...I am not a fan of this Twitter-thang. 140 characters? Really?! Come on twit...I like to talk and hate appreviations! ;)
I am with you. I do not understand the point of it. Though I did have someone explain it that Facebook is to tell people you know what you are doing and Twitter is to tell people you DO NOT know what you are doing. Still seems stupid to me.
Yep...I tried twitter and deleted the account the same day. I don't get it at all. I think it is just another way for society to become more self involved. Think I'll stick to facebook and the blogosphere as well.
I didn't really get into it at first either. And I can rarely say everything that I need to put out into the world in so few characters. Random is totally underappreciated, in my opinion :)
@ajakz
I am so glad to find someone else that doesn't get it! I hate twitter, and I definatly feel the whole popularity contest thing. I have no followers and therefor sit at the loser table at lunch.
I just can't read it when it get's all @y and #y... with links and stuff. I feel like I'm reading sanscrit.. and honestly... it drives me NUTS when people are "having conversations" on it.. JEES - Im them or text or something
To me Twitter just seems like a stalker's dream come true.
And any more references to the boil and I'll have to stop reading this blog while eating breakfast.
I tweet occasionally, but I really don't "get" it. For the most part it seems to be "retweeting" to win something or blog promotion. I mainly use it to chat with blog friends.
Well, you just need to find better people to follow. Then things will get more interesting.
I don't get Twitter either. And I must admit I am getting sick of Facebook. So you're not the only one.
I use twitter to get all my news. I follow the twitter accounts from my local news stations and places like cnn and the hollywood reporter (cause what's my day without a little hollywood!). My twitter feeds have replaced reading the newspaper and watching tv for news and information.
Thus ends the saga of @RavingsOfAMadBoil.
Keep on tweetin on.
Dont feel bad I dont have Twitter either, and I actually deleted my Facebook because I was gettin tried of that one too. I dont hardly have time enough as it is alone to blog, much less Twitter or Facebook.
R.I.P. Mad Boil
I have a twitter account, and I don't use it much either. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks it's rather dumb. I really don't need to know the intimate details of everyone else's lives, and some people share those a little too often on Twitter from my experience.
I like reading some other people's tweets, but I don't feel like I make as much of a connection there as other people, and I'm not really sure why? It's hard when you get to following hundreds of people, I need to whittle it down so I can try and make more of a connection. The thing is, I guess I'm "supposed" to be networking, but I just can't communicate with so many people!
I don't get it either and the reference you gave to the chatrooms is exactly true!!! I feel the same way and I also opened an account and then gave up ... I don't even think I really used it. But no matter what or how many people use it, I just can't get into it!
Mmmm...yeah, I don't get twitter either. I have an account, and I actually used it once or twice. I couldn't tell you the last time I signed in.
I have a twitter account. I'm not following anyone, no one is following me...I haven't even finished filling out my profile. I started it like 10 months ago? I haven't logged in since. Everyone I know is using Twitter but me. I feel slightly left out but not enough to log back in...not yet anyways. It makes me feel a little better knowing that there are people out there in the world that aren't on that darn site and it's not just me lol
I love Twitter! When I came home from the hospital, it was my link to the outside world. I got my news and celeb gossip from just reading my stream.
Now I have used it to connect with new blogs and new bloggers. While I follow a lot of blogs on Google reader, I can read a new post faster when someone puts the link out there.
I didn't get it at first either. But then after I made some friends through blogging I found it a lot of fun. Great way to stay connected with them and chat. Also, I LOVE reading articles that people tweet out. I am addicted and could click links for hours :)
